New Ford Everest Campaign

For someone who lives at the tip of Africa, I actually get to see a lot of the world in my work travels. Travels I worked my entire career to have. If you asked me at the start of the year if I saw myself ever getting to see the most remote corners of China… I’d have thought you crazy. Well, fools on me this time. I’ve recently wrapped up one of the most incredible journeys I’ve EVER done in my career with Ford and their new Ford Everest.

Shanghai, Beijing, Xinjiang, Urumqi, Hami, Nanchang, Shihezi, Kuytun. These are just some of the many places I got to see. From as far East to West to North as the China borders go, we went. I was told we did over 10,000km in travel within China over 2 weeks. So yeah, we racked up some serious travel miles. The only way I would be to describe it: mind-blowing. Not only are the natural landscapes of China as vast & surrealistically beautiful as people like to call South Africa, it is just SO different to anything I’ve ever experienced. Culturally & traditions endlessly fascinating. Old world mixed with new. People. People everywhere.

Our campaign was geared towards showing the Ford Everest in the most epic scenery. ‘The most capable Ford yet’ being the slogan. Things are always organic to a degree on shoots. Certain things change as the travel & locations reveal themselves in that moment. Everything is pre-scouted, so there is no guesswork on what we’re going to do. However sometimes things just, work, that wasn’t part of the original plan. Our 6KVs did change a slight bit because we had so many regions to cover & different things appeal to different regions. However it will always be the strongest material to show off the capabilities of our vehicle.

So here are our 6 final hero images & below is a compilation of behind-the-scenes which were kindly sent to me by my assistant & producer. What a blast! I’d do it all over again in a heartbeat.

2014 In Review

I realised that I had in fact forgotten to do a long standing tradition of reviewing a year in retrospect to see what had been done in those 12 months. I had actually put all the content together, but gotten so distracted with how busy 2015 has started off. I also decided to do something new for this blog. I very seldom share any travel images that I shoot while traveling on assignment. 2014 saw loads of travel to some awesome locations, so I’ve added in a few of those just to mix things up a bit. I always have these grand ideas to put together a nice solid selection of travel images, but never seem to get a moment to do it. Perhaps 2015 might be the year for that, who knows. :)

So I’m also going to just add a highlight review of 2014 in no particular calendar month order because I’ve realised it doesn’t actually matter either. It’s the year in review, not month.

So here we go! The year Twenty Fourteen:

The Photographer Hashtag Bucket List

We all dream of going places. Seeing new horizons & exploring new roads. I think it may be ingrained in us as human beings. However take those feelings & multiply them by 100. That comes close to the surging levels of ‘travel need’ a photographer/videographer has! I know I have my #bucketlist of places I want to go as a photographer & director. What is yours? Well, I asked around for some suggestions & this is what YOU said: (all images are sourced from google & copyright belongs to their respective owners)

Steve Parkes (@stevoparkes) said:
“The rugged north of Canada to see the aurora borealis amongst the untouched wild. #bucketlist”
Canada - Unforgettable & Rugged Beauty of The Canadian Rockies - NorthernCanada2

Graham Bartholomew (@GrahamBart) says:
“Patagonia, spectacular mountains and Fjords.”

Chloé Boshoff says:
“The Lushoto Pass, Tanzania – Didn’t expect to see what I saw there… It literally silenced me for 38km!”

Espen Bjarne Olsen (facebook) says:
“Being patriotic – Geiranger, or Hardangervidda, Norway.”

Magnus Mikkelsen (facebook) says:
“Antelope canyon, USA”

John Potts (facebook) says:
“Alaska for the landscapes and northern lights”

Mark Freebs (website) says:
“It would have to be Scandinavia. Beautiful scenery, totally different cultures in the various countries. I’d go back there in a heartbeat. Locally it would have to be the Transkei, for the same reasons!”

Jess Hind (website) says:
“Northern Lights and Grand Canyon”

Ruan Redelinghuys (@RRedelinghuys) says:
“Cappadocia, Turkey. Shooting all the hot-air balloons at sunrise could be very special.”

Finally, I’ve been so fortunate to cross several places off my list in my life so far. This is still one of my major ones:

Thanks for everyone who sent through their photographer #bucketlist! If this doesn’t make you want to go explore this amazingly gorgeous world of ours, nothing will! Go have a mini adventure this weekend. It’s Friday. 2 days ahead that can take you as far as your petrol allowance goes.

Nikon’s New AW1 – Waterproof, Shockproof, Freezeproof compact camera

If you like to follow the blogs like Nikon Rumors for possible info on the new tech/models Nikon might/will be releasing, you might have noticed one that they posted a couple weeks ago about a “Serious underwater compact camera”. Not much else as far as info, but enough to catch my eye. Underwater photography isn’t my forte, but I have been on the lookout for something that I could take snorkling/diving when summer comes around. Although with the weather in Cape Town, ‘summer’ seems like a distant cousin right now. Be that as it may, taking some great underwater photos on my next trip below the waves is high on my agenda.

02_Nikon_AW1

Enter Nikon’s new 1-series AW1. This is being hailed as the first digital waterproof/shockproof ILC (interchangeable lens camera) on the market. An O-ring that has a normal bayonet lens fitting (like our SLR’s) is what seals the lens & body when you decide to take it under the waves. It is rated to 49 feet, which in el-normal language to us South African’s is 15m. A depth way below what your average snorkel might take you (unless you’re a buddying freestyle diver in the making). Regular SCUBA dives might border on 15m depending on location & visibility, but overall, a decent enough depth to take photos at.

The kit comes with a 11-27.5mm f3.5-5.6 lens which offers a nice range for underwater & general wide angle shooting. Don’t discard the use for landscapes just because it can go swimming with the AW1. It is also dust-proof, shock-proof, kid-proof, grandma-proof. The 2nd lens release (in the same durable style of the AW1 & 11-27mm) is a 10mm f2.8 lens, for those who like it super wide & want the added wide aperture benefits in low light. If you are an existing 1-series Nikon owner however, never fear, your regular 1-series lenses will still fit on the AW1 thanks to a little adapter. However going swimming with regular 1-series lenses is not recommended… of course.

06_Nikon_AW1

Under the hood, the AW1 is almost the same as the J3. The CX-format sensor pushes out 14.2 megapixels, which you can crank up to ISO6400, throw in 1080p full-HD video with pop-up flash unit (that can be used underwater too) and you have the main specs. The AW1 however comes with loads of extra McGyver style toys like altimeter, GPS, compass, depth gauge and an accelerometer-powered option for switching camera modes one-handed, should your other hand be, err, occupied.

05_Nikon_AW1 04_Nikon_AW1 03_Nikon_AW1

The USA retail price is set at roughly $800 (AW1 + 11-27mm lens) and the 10mm f2.8 at an extra $200. Local pricing is still unknown, but I’m sure we’ll all know soon enough after the first shipments take place next month. Follow Nikon South Africa on twitter, facebook & also watch the Orms website as they generally one of the first stores to get stock. Hopefully I’ll get my hands on one to review more in-depth when they land in SA. Follow me on twitter to stay tuned.

Do it! Get It Out Your System!

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve come through Dubai International & endured the horrible wait for a connecting flight in those hellishly uncomfortable chairs that make your legs go numb after 20 minutes which leads to severe pins & needles that makes you walk like a spaz. What I have been doing is getting smarter about my business travel. Casey Neistat released a little video about how he always flies with American Airlines & being such a frequent flyer, he is able to upgrade himself to a better traveling experience. I’ve chosen Emirates Airlines as my preferred airline. I’m either shooting in Dubai or going via Dubai to somewhere else. With the Frequent Flyer program, I’ve finally gotten to the point where I can book myself into an Emirates Lounge, get free food, free booze/drinks, wifi, couches, showers, etc. Took a while, but totally worth it! The other alternative is just flying Business/First class, in which case you automatically qualify for these perks. However this means you have to have a fat wallet to begin with. This all said, it does mean I have reached the end of my trip to USA. Those I’ve spoken to know that this trip had a mile long agenda. Something I’ve been wanting to do for many years now, I’m glad to have finally gotten it out of my system. Or put something into my system. Either way, it has been the perfect thing for me creatively, professionally & for my career. I will sit & put together a blog post which is a massive summary of my entire trip from Los Angeles to New York. It will be mostly pictures, because I was a little crazy about snapping just about everything. Till then, have a great week. 1 more flight & I’ll be back to my beloved Cape Town.

Bald Eagles, Star Flags & ‘Merica

So the last week has seen me fly 16,000km around the world. I exchanged the then-wet Cape Town shores for the now-sunny LA shores. Did I mention its sunny here? All the time. All. The. Time. It seems to be the norm that one needs a fireman suit for general outdoor activities. OK, perhaps I exaggerate a tad.

Coming to America has been something on my to-do list for several years now. As creative souls, we need travel to keep our fire burning. Being isolated in one space can creatively kill us. No, in fact, it does creatively kill us. So doing things like traveling from Cape Town to Los Angeles & New York is probably the best thing to invest back into our careers. It may take some money yes, however, as the old saying goes, “travel is the one of the few things you can spend money on to make you richer”. I always feel so fired up & motivated after travel, which lasts well over a year sometimes! This fire keeps me going through all the opposition & rubbish that gets thrown at us.

Since arriving I’ve managed to see quite a bit. I’ve gone down & “experienced” Venice Beach with all it’s crazy folks. There was such a massive variety of artists selling their wares. Most of them perhaps falling into the alternate lifestyle category. ie: engraved skulls, dream catchers, hippie medicinal items. I did however support an ink artist who created very cool ink splatter art that made up an image obviously. I dig it. I bought a Yoda one & a Japanese tree scene.

Venice-Beach

I then met up with my mate Steve Demmit who took me for a drive out to Malibu & beyond. We headed up to a point called Magu Point which is this awesome lookout over the Californian coast line. We stopped, shot some plates for later use & just saw how close we could get to the cliff edges. This was also the day I had my first Taco Bell. Most American’s cringed when they heard this, providing reasons why I might find myself either incapacitated with stomach problems. I can say I’ve safely lived to tell the tale.

Me-Taco-Bell

That evening, a bunch of photographers based in LA all met up to have “Steve’s going away thing”. It also ended up being “Seagram’s welcome to America thing”. I’ve heard a lot about Korean BBQ in Korea Town. For those back at home in Cape Town that have ever been to a restaurant called Galbi (just off Long Street), this is almost the same. It’s a buffet meat BBQ that involves all kinds of meat cuts (shaved slives, pork medallions, etc) that gets grilled on a massive hot plate in the centre of your table. For $20 this is a pretty cheap meal. I ate until I couldn’t move. Probably the largest meal I’ve had since arriving in LA. I’d love to see something like this come to SA. Definitely a group activity for 4+.

Korean-BBQ

On one of the first evenings after I arrived in LA, I was invited to go see a concert at The Hollywood Bowl. Oddly enough, out of all the things I remember from coming to the USA when I was a kid (6 years old) I remember the Hollywood Bowl. Not entirely sure why, as we didn’t come to a concert or anything the first time. This evening however, we watched the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra perform Mendelssohn’s 3rd Violin Concerto. It was the most spectacular evening for this open air concert, paired with a great bottle of wine, cracker snacks & cheese. A bit of culture went a long way in settling my mind after the extensive travel.

Hollywood-Bowl

So that pretty much wraps up my social activities here in LA so far. I’ll be sure to post some more blogs about what I’ve been up to as things go. I’ll be able to share some work related news soon. Still working out the specifics.

I hope everyone back in South Africa is having a fantastic time still!

Here are a few more shots to fill the blanks. :)

– Chuck Norris was probably my favourite.
Hollywood-Blvd-Chuck-Norris
– The Grove open air shopping centre. With a tram that goes a whole 200m. Novelties.
The-Grove
– Random LA street stuff
Street-Random-3

– Almost all Hollywood streets have massive palms.
Street-Random-2
– The most variety of cars I’ve ever seen. From this, to, THAT.
Street-Random-1
– Ever wonder what the North Pole looks like? Yeah, this is some of it.
North-Pole
– Magu Point, California. Above Malibu
Mogu-Point-Pano
– Messing around on the cliff edges of Magu Point
Mogu-Point-Climbing
– Didn’t take long to attend my first red carpet event! :D
Me-Red-Carpet-Event
– Thats me. Checking things out. And kinda missing home a tad.

Yachting at Sunset

So I don’t always see a lot of my parental. Ever since I moved out of home at 18, I’ve lived a very busy life & so does she. Although we do make a point of getting together for dinner or breakfast at least once a month to touch base. For someone who only has one parent left, even once a month is a pretty crap statistic. But we make do with the lives we live. In any case, I hope you all had a good weekend. I was surprised by my mom with an awesome yachting trip last night. A simple trip that just lifted my mood for the week completely! With it being a surprise, I didn’t have my camera with me (unfortunately). However, as that saying goes, the best camera is the one you have with you.

So I decided to try something different for a blog post. Armed with only my iPhone4S I took as many pics as I would have if I had my Nikon with me. All shot & edited too on phone, here is a small summary of one of the most incredible evenings I’ve had in many years.
